DAY 1: KUWAIT vs MALAYSIA
Kuwait's women cricketers won their first ever senior victory with a six-wicket victory over Malaysia on the opening day of the ACC Women's Twenty20. "We've won at U-19s twice, and this is a result achieved because of a lot of hard work by the team," said Kuwait's coach Tariq Rasool.
Play got underway amidst cool morning at KOC Hubara, following a ceremony which involved the British Ambassador to Kuwait HE Frank Baker and the Olympic Council of Asia General Secretary Haider Farman and Kuwait were among the Malaysian wickets early. Kuwait's new ball bowlers Anisha D'Silva, Sabreena Zaki and Khadija Khalil were impressive - though wides still tarnished their efforts - and after 7 overs Malaysia were 25 for 4. Khadija Khalil took a good catch low down at square leg to get rid of Rewina Mohammad, pulling. Malaysia recovered thanks to a battling 20* by Cristina Baret but Kuwait will feel they could and should have taken even more wickets.
Malaysia got up to a respectable 85 for 8 after 18 overs before Varshini Suresh put an end to proceedings three balls into the next over.
Cheered on by a noisy crowd of fans, (as if Kuwait's captainSiobhan Gomez wasn't rousing enough) Kuwait set about their target positively. An excellent reflex return catch by Dewi Chunam had Kuwait at 5 for 2 after 2 overs but Gomez was resolute in defense and mostly attack and with Afia Khan put on 55 in eight overs to take the game away from Malaysia. Malaysia didn't help themselves with a number of dropped catches but it was Kuwait's day from start to finish.
